Default Fixed Styles.

I've found some time to start designing again after a 3 -4 month leave and I've started on a fixed style based off of one of my other styles which is fluid. It's based off the nature calls style.

Anyway, The fixed width style I've opted for is 960px which means the style doesn't compensate for people still using 800 width resolutions (quite frankly I think styles look terribly ugly at 800px 600px) so I opted to abandon any type of design for the 800s.

I guess my question to the stylers out there is have you made any styles that you haven't compensated for the 800 res users? I don't see it has a problem and normally it's not good practice to abandon this group but for me I think it kind of limits in what you can do.

Any thoughts on the subject would be nice and reasons why you still support this resolution. BTW The main reason why I discarded this resolution was the introduction of side coloumns which really pursuaded me to opt to abandon this size of resolution (something I wouldn't have normally done).

I coded a PSD for a client at 975px but he came back to me 3 weeks later and asked me to alter the width because all his members were complaining.

I find 820px looks nice :p

We don't waste our time on styles under 960. We also don't worry about when people complain because they have problems using a style on IE 4.0 :p In a perfect world you could worry about everyone but our concern is for those who are in the majority (which doesn't include those who use 800 or below).

I never said I was concerned, I'm customizing the style around the resolution I'm using. Whether people find it difficult to use or have major side scrolling problems will be their problem, I'm a little selfish like that when it comes to the style I'm designing but it looks like the resolution (which may be an issue to them) is the least of my problems because technically it isn't my problem. :devious:

Yeah, Your client must have viewed the style in 800x600 and took a heart attack when he seen what his members had to see in this res. The scrolling issues can be a right pain if your stuck with the res.

If I am going to do a fixed width, I usually do them under 800px. That way it atleast fits on all web browsers.

Actually you need to make it 780px as there will be a border of varied width (0-10px) around both sides of the window.

I think judging by this conversation I'll be settling for the (resolution I've forgotten). It's not like I'm designing this style for a client but rather an alternative style for members to choose at my site.

If by the offchance they are running at 800px x 600px they can switch over to the default style I picked so it's not like they haven't got a choice.

I'm guessing at some stage the 800 res will eventually be abandoned by designers/stylers I just hate such a low resolution which poses many restrictions so my decision remains the same.

Most of my fixed styles run between 900px and 1000px. SpaceBuffs is...ah...950px, I think. That said, the skin I'm designing for my upcoming design site is 750px, just for the sake of those few 800x600 hangers-on.
