Default Whats the best way to transfer over a forum?

i'm going to change hosts and was thinking of just recreating my forums. Can I just re-download the orignal Vb software?
also, I want to keep all the threads and posts, but the rest I want to just not even transfer over, how could I do this?

We just did this a week ago. We updated everything to 3.6. Edit your old forum to how you want the new forum to be and then just copy the database. Make sure you click on 'update thread and forums' in the ACP or the new database won't show them ;)

You can redownload your vbulletin as long as you have a active liscense still, but just log into the members area to check. Why bother, here is a super simple way.

Make sure to backup your site DB, make two or 3 just incase

You must first be a registered member to view any code.
easiest way is to just tarball your whole entire site folder
You must first be a registered member to view any code.
and then scp it to your new server
You must first be a registered member to view any code.
once there untar
You must first be a registered member to view any code.
go create your new DB and username and password through your control panel software.
restore your db
You must first be a registered member to view any code.
that should be the easiest way to move it all

If I wanted to do an update and a host change (on a highly modified vb) at the same time what would I do? I'm gonna be moving from shared to dedi hosting with no root access on the shared host.

I'm currently on 3.5.0 with a 150meg+ database, would I transfer the whole site as it is and then do an upgrade, or should I install the latest software and then import the database?

there is a couple approches opionons may vary.

Personally, id download whatever version you'd want to upgrade to. Simply upload the script to your new host, DO NOT INSTALL IT

Get your backup from your old server restored on the new host, edit the config.php file to match your settings.

Then run the upgrade script rather than install, and reimport the old database.

Of course you'll still need to move your attachments and images and the such.

Yeah it's the tables used in my hacks that I'm most concerned about.

I might test out both ways and see how they turn out.

We couldn't agree more. As far as your members are concerned your site being down reflects on you. It might be time for you to look into using a more professional host like Site5. Since we've started using them we haven't had any problems at all :nervous:
