the part that I'm ostly interested in is the right hand column where different templates are used to show new contents of different sections.

There are a few side column hacks available at vbulletin.org. Modules for them can be requested or you can hire a coder to make them for you. All it basically does is grab the latest threads from a single forum.

yes, I've done the side column and have created the little tables on the column,
Just need to look a little bit more to find out how to get the "new posts" query to show up in those little tables,
