Default vb3.5 first impressions

Now that it’s been here for a few days I thought it might be a nice idea to have a little discussion about we think of it so far.

My initial thoughts are that it’s got some nice features the Ajax will certainly be something Ill be delving more into. The plug in system so far I have found to be ok had the hooks right were I needed them for the most part.

The admincp being void of hooks however for me means that any hack I produce either needs to have hard coded forum/user perms etc. or back to modding files which of course negates the reasons for the plug in system in the first place. Which was to allow users to install hacks with ought the need to modify original vbulletin source.

The way the plug in system works I’m not so sure about either. Sure it will make upgrades a lot easier and none coders now have a very idiot/childproof install system but from a coders point of view I'm not sure it’s any better or any worse than just modding the source. I do know that I would rather have access to my code via file rather than the admincp. Storing the php code in the dbase is a nice idea but I just prefer having a file I can modify rather than some little blue box. That way I can make changes offline and test them then upload to live server. I know I can still do that with this system but maybe I just fear change ;)

Anyway your thoughts and first impressions please id be interested to see what others think of it so far.

The first think i did when i download vBulletin 3.5 was look at the code. It was /includes/functions_showthread.php acually. For some reason i find myself hacking that file quite often. Anyways, i was very impressed. The hooks system is a great addon, but of course not able to add a plugin to the admincp is anoyying and defets the purpose. But i know it will be added in a later release.

I don't mind adding the code to the db, but im going to miss opening the file to hack it. But the only think keeping me from doing that is that it will be so much eaiser to upgrade. I'm dreading the upgrade for this site as i have quite a few hacks installed.

But, i can't wait till the next release which will be Beta 2 im sure. You can expect alot of changesfrom beta 1 to beta 2. Thats the reason why im not hacking the beta1 version as much as i want too.

What are your reasons for not liking 3.5.0?
