Mike, i am right here with you. I am in the stone restoration industry, I can see a few of you scratching your heads. I am the guy that comes to your home and polish your natural stone counter top and floors. Yes some one does that. The way I got members is to do shows where I knew my pears would be. I did two shows and went from 134 to 588 members. I am now setting up to go to another show in November that I just know I am going to get more members. getting members is easy getting work from them is not, getting them to share information is not, and making them feel like your forum is home is what I want to focus on. I rather have a few guys that help each other than bunch of lurkers.

The reason I am here is to get my forum ready for the new members that will come to the site. the last 2 shows the site was down and I lost a lot of potential members.

Joh for a work oriented site that is a great idea. And you are right its very hard to get people to be actual customers in the end. But if the site is not job related or work related then its a bit different and you have to do some other original things and have some original ideas. Here are some ideas for getting people to your site:

1) Advertise on other like forums if they allow it. If not you can put a link to your forum in your signature and just be an active member. This will help some.

2) Try getting in as an affiliate with a site simialr to yours. This is a great way to improve traffic.

3) Make sure that you submit your site to search engines and make sure that the key words you use will be the words that people will type in to get to your site. For instance. My site is about metal music and bootleg trades in metal music. I make sure that these things are in my keywords as well as the word forums, discussion boards, message boards, etc. You get the point.

4) Talk to freinds you have online who have similar interests as you and similar interests as the forum you are promoting.

5) Offer something other than chit chat on your forum. This means offer possibly a contest or something else that is oriented with your forum. In my case I offer files for download like band photos & covers and basic information on the main topic.

6) Offer a general chat area. This may seems kinda stupid but alot of people would rather just hang out and chat than be totally serious all the time about the forums.

7) I have a game area & a poll area. This offers the members games & polls to come back to and see what has been posted and promotes them to post again. We have several running games that have to do with Heavy Metal for obvious reasons. Same with the polls. If some just come in and post in these areas its ok because you never know when they will be reading the forum and see something they want to get involved in and start posting elsewhere.

8) Make it like a community. After all its a forum and should be kinda like a community of like minded individuals. If they have a sense of community they are more likely to come back and post.

9) Make sure that you don't allow certain things in your forums like flaming and people acting overall stupid towards each other. This will turn off potential people who might of been great in the community but they are not interested in getting knocked everytime they make a post. Who would?

10) Make sure you have a strong mod team that posts and keeps up with the forums and make sure that your mod team you pick are overall interested in your forum and what's going on, if not your forum will go no where quickly.

The breakdown really is you need to offer more than just the forum in itself. You can offer many other things for your uses out there. There are role playing games that you can interegrate that would be great for a gaming forum if that's what you have, or there are other things that you can offer if the forum is business related all the while keeping the forum on topic. A really good thing to do is go around to popular forums and look at what they have done. See what you like and what you don't like and expand on them for your forum. Look at succesful forums and see what they all have in common. This will help you greatly when you are first starting. Or even when you want to increase membership.

Joh did you have a website for your business? If you do and you connect it with your forum this will also help traffic to your site. Doing shows has to be costly I would think or at least some of the times it may be and when you are in business for yourself its hard to spare extra exspenses. And BTW I always thought it was just common knowlegde that you had to re-finish stone tiles (floors) and buff them out. But then again I guess not many people do realize that there's a certain amount of work that goes in maintaining ANY floooring in your home

Hope this helps someone.

MP

Thanks MP, all that you have describe is what I am trying to do. To tell you the truth I have a pretty good idea what to do I just do not have anyone that I could rely on to do the coding stuff. Here is some thing that I have done to get people talking. I have ask a few manufactures that deal with the stone boniness to come to the site to speak about the products that they make. this gives the guys the chance to see what is new on the market, get free samples, get the correct information on the tools, and it also give both party's a level of comfort. All of this was done at no cost to the parties. The sales guys now want to support the forum by placing ads, I do not have a good way to display ads on the forum:embarrass A few of the guys are linking to the forum from there web site, i just need to get a small button that they could use. Trade shows are not that expensive, most people spend more money in the yellow pages. at trade shows you get your target audience. you have 2-3 days to make an impression that could last a life time.

Would be a great idea to get the ads on there. That will most likely help you alot. There are some things on here that you can install for advertisements or at least I thought there might be. You should check out the mods area. Alot of them are not that hard to install and you don't need a degree in rocket scientrisy to install them either LOL.

You have more faith in me than I do. Every time I try to do one thing i mess some thing else up. I am better off paying some one to do it. plus when I try to the hack stuff every one on the forum see it and get on my case.

What do you mean they see it? LOL That's not good if they are seeing php code in the forums when you hack something. Actually there are quite a few modificatoins & hacks that you can just install from the admin panel. Not all but there are quite a few. And don't feel bad. I hand code css, html, make my own templates & desing pages and still cannot figure out how to insert a plugin to my forum if its by itself LOL. Just takes practice. What alot of administrators do is install a test board and then try to install what they want there without disturbing their members until they are sure that they have a handle on how to install it.

MP can you post some links to some of the hacks you speak of. this is what I get when ever I try to play in the back. This is one of many that the guys see.

Warning: chdir() [function.chdir]: No such file or directory (errno 2) in /home/huligar/public_html/nsraweb/forum/vB.Sponsors/link.php on line 27

Warning: main(./global.php) [function.main]: failed to open stream: No such file or directory in /home/huligar/public_html/nsraweb/forum/vB.Sponsors/link.php on line 29

Fatal error: main() [function.require]: Failed opening required './global.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/huligar/public_html/nsraweb/forum/vB.Sponsors/link.php on line 29

OK Couple of questions. Where did you get the hack? I'm guessing that its for your sponsers of your site. There are two possible things you can check on this hack that you've posted about. One make sure you uploaded all the files to your web space & they are CHMOD correctly (if need be) and Two, Make sure that if you had to make any changes in the code at all that you modified it correctly. These things could be your problem. Or you may just have your directory listing wrong someone in your code. What you are looking at translated is: Warning the required page failed to open because there is no such file or directory in which the modified/unmodified file (link.php) is directing this page to.

In all hacks make sure you follow the instructions that should be with them to the letter and usually if you have problems you can post back in a forum that you got it from. Like if you got it from the vb site then you should be able to post in that site and say hey I get this error when I try to load the page.

I can try and help you with this hack, but I'm not sure that we can do that on the forum unless its a hack that has come from here. So if you like we can take it to a messenger if you have one. I have MSN, ICQ, Yahoo & AIM. Just shoot me a PM with your messenger nick or number and I can add you. As for other places with hacks I'm not sure that I can post that as well here. I have not seen anything about it but don't want to get both of us in trouble. There are a few other VB boards that offer hacks and help though. You could probably google it and find them pretty easily.
