The benefit of google adsense is only monetary. It won't help your forums grow in the sense that it brings more traffic, but it might in the sense it generates monies for you to use on developing your forum.

And now for the irritating, cynical, foul-tempered critic in the bunch:

[BEGIN hyperbole]
The purpose of Google AdSense is to make Google rich. How? By auctioning off the content you worked so hard to create, to your competitors. You'll find yourself sucked into a situation where you're:

1. Constantly filtering out your competitors ads (it's keyword sensitive. If you're selling coffee on your site, everyone else selling coffee on their sites will have an ad that appears on YOUR site).

2. Wondering how to alter your content to get higher-paying ads...

Congratulations, you've just become a Google Sales Agent. That forum you started out of passion for a particular subject has now been *****d out to Google, and you've just become a pimp.

If you manage to break free from this self-destructive behavior, Google will still "monetize" the complete copy of your site they stole from you and stored in their "cache".
[END hyperbole]

It makes it possible for website publishers to earn money on their site no matter how big or small their websites.

Who knows? Google doesn't reveal anything, they simply dance the dance of a thousand veils, with all the SEO-hangers-on ooh-ing and ah-ing over what they think they just saw.

Thanks.

Though my reply is cynical indeed, I think it's correct. Any evidence that using AdSense and/or AdWords would influence your site's PageRank or rank on SERPs would only be anecdotal. Google simply doesn't say.

The thing is the amount of forums who have "Free Vbulletin" or "PHPBB Forum" or "Wordpress Adsense" in there ads are unbelievable. Yes i am looking at you mr. vbhackers admin :p The keywords are low paying becuase they are so common. They are common becuase most people have not changed the tags on the webpages. Thus people with ads that fit those keywords get CHEAP ADS! (Meta tags)
