How would you like to encourage people to surf your forum more often while they are at work? A lot of people are afraid to go to forums while they are working, because if their boss walks in and catches them - they are up a creek without a paddle This mod gives them a paddle :p Of course this mod could also be used if your members aren't at work, and they simply want a quick way to look something up at Google.

This mod inserts a special section in each members profile which asks your members if they want to display an 'emergency escape' button in every postbit. Then, if anyone happens to walk into the room while they are at work surfing your forum, they simply click on the 'escape' button, and it immediately sends them to Google, where they can simply say they're looking something up for work related research. This gives your members more confidence to surf your forum, over another forum that doesn't have this hack installed. If a member doesn't want the button to show up, they simply turn it off at any time in their profile. This also gives guests another reason to register on your site, as this feature is only available to members. We recommend that you make a formal announcement telling your members about this new feature, or they may not know it exist in their profile. Thank You ;)

Thank you.

edit - I can't seem to get this working. I've edited it to the correct profile field but it just refuses to show up. Hmmm..

9.

I've edited the little code and replaced the 7 with a 9. I've now just done something simple without the profile option. Thanks for the idea anyway

Okay, I have uploaded the hack to our site. I have a report for you.

Everything uploaded great. I did have to use a different field number as I have so many hacks #7 was already occupied. LOL! So I had to adjust the code in postpit legacy to the automatically generated field number for the hack in the Profile Field Manager.

When I did that, boom went the dynamite! The button showed up and it is working as designed.

A couple of comments. The description only allows 250 characters. It was cut off in the middle so I had to shorten it a bit. You may want to adjust the description to be under 250 characters in your instructions.

Also, the button only appears in your own posts. Not in the other members posts. I think it would be better if the hack displayed the button in all of the posts. When someone is reading the threads and someone walks in it will be easier to click the button in the post you are reading rather then scrolling down. Right now the hack is exactly like your home button at the top of your screen. Now you just have one at the bottom. What would really make this hack powerful would be to have it show up in all posts.

I think it is a very nice hack, but if it can be in all of the posts it would be truly amazing!

Update:

It appears that you can see the button on SOME of the other members posts. Most people don't have the button in their posts, but some do. How do you get it to show in all members posts?

Also, when you turn the feature off, it appears it will only take the button off your own posts. Is it supposed to eliminate it completely?

Thanks again for this hack!

I've had people request such a feature and I felt it was unique enough that it should be made. Have fun with it

Hi Doggy1. What postbit are you using, standard, or legacy?

We made this using a default vB. There should be no problems but I'll double check this as we just upgraded to 3.6 RC2 minutes ago. Can't get any more default than that :p

Hi there Colonel Ingus.

We are using legacy.

But yeah, there seems to be a thingy on our site that doesn't let members turn it off completely. They still see it on others posts. And if you do set it to YES, not all the posts has the buttons. Other than that, it is looking good!
