What does BUMP mean?
BUMP stands for Bringing Up My Thread. When the Bump Thread button is pressed, it does exactly that. It brings up the thread in the thread list.

What does it do?
This mod does a number of things, here's a list:

1. Add a Bump Thread link to every thread for the staff only, meaning the staff can bump any thread anywhere.

2. Add a Next Bump Timer (admincp definable) to specific forums (admincp definable), when it reaches 0 (thus next bump time), it shows the Bump Thread link to the thread starter. Take a look at the screenshot for clarity.
Note: The timer is based on the last reply date/time.

3. In order to keep things nice and simple, I've wrapped it all up into a Plugin code, meaning you won't have to make any edits anywhere (template edits excluded), and you won't have to upload any files.

4. Misc. Option: I've added a nice little function which allows you to set a username prefix (allowing HTML) to the thread bump-er. Basicly, when bumping a thread the username of the bump-er will be displayed as being the last replyer. With this function you can add a suffix to that name, which will show in in the forum lists.

5. Misc. Info: The hack bumps a thread by setting the last reply dateline to the time/date of the button press. This way, the bump-er's postcount won't increase when bumping, yet the thread will be on the top of the list.

What use is this mod to my forum?
It's very useful for forums like Trade Forums, or sharing communities. Ofcourse, I think everyone can think of something where this system would come in handy, but the former 2 stick out a bit.

What I generally see a lot of trade forums, is members with 4 digit postcounts, 3/4th (or more!) of those posts simply being bump posts. With this system, you and your members can more accurately judge the contributions by the members.

How to install?
The plugin and instructions on the templates are included in the .zip.

What to do after that?
Configure the system in the vBulletin Options, and make the template edits.

Do you have a To-Do list?
As the mather of fact, I do ! Here it is:
  • Add usergroup permissions. - Allow the admins to set the the bump permissions in the usergroup manager.
  • Adding the forum permissions to the forum manager, instead of the vB setting
  • Add an option for admins to enable a system which blocks users from posting twice in a row in the forums specified in the admincp. Usergroup permissions will also be added to this.
  • Add the option for the user to add an automatic "bump" post with admin specified content.
  • Your suggestion goes here! I'll always consider adding good suggestions from members!

Enjoy this nice little mod, and don't forget that the install button is your friend!

Thanks ;).

It took me a while getting the timer to work, and wasn't able to get it to show seconds. If anyone has some spare time and is willing to help me with this, please take a look at the timer code and see if you can narrow the countdown down to seconds. That would be much appreciated .

Great Idea! Did you release any pre-1.0 releases? (Has this been field tested?)

As I read this, the thread starter and the admin can set a timer for it to be bumped. Is that correct? Can it be restricted to only certain usergroups?

If a timer is set to bump a thread, can it be cancelled.

What form does the bump take - is it a new reply or is the date of the post updated? Presumably, it I wanted it to just update the post date, that would be easy, no?

Is there a forum where I can see this live?

Thanks!
Barry

Dear Barry,

I have been testing this for a couple of weeks on my test board (bump times take time :p) and it seems to be working perfectly. However, this is still the first public release.

Indeed, administrators with permission to set the vB options can set a bump time in hours. Moderators who have moderating permission in the forum where the thread is in can bump the thread, independant of the hack settings. In forums specified by the administrators, the thread starters can bump their threads. So far I haven't added user permissions per usergroup.

I haven't added a start/stop setting for the timer, its simply based on the last reply. If someone replies to the thread the timer is reset.

When a thread is bumped, only the last reply date is updated. This way, users can't spam up their ostcounts 'bumping up' threads ;).

I haven't added better options to the forum settings and usergroup settings simply because I wasn't sure whether or not people were interested in this. If you want me to add usergroup permissions and the forum permissions to the hack, let me know and I'll add it when I have some spare time.

Hope that answered your questions!
