vB 3.6.0 Compatible!

Hey there,

First release here, I'm sure most might know me from over at vB.org, in anycase they broke my vBShout, so here's a fixed version, with a few extra bits:

- Flatfile System (Seriously cuts any intensity this once created before)
- Bug Fix: ' used to break edit shout
- Bug Fix: Users couldn't edit/delete their shouts
- Bug Fix: Parsing problem (that vb.org created..)
- Feature Disabled: Timestamps, this is unfortunatly due to using a flat file system.

Enjoy everyone, if you have the previous vBShout installed, I suggest uninstallation the previous vBShout product then installating this one fresh (saves you havning to revert templates).

Also, this will work for any vB 3.5 installation

Enjoy

- Zero Tolerance

And with out a time stamp know one knows when the last shout was made. I find this version to be unacceptable at it's current status. Seems more like a quick fix then a upgrade or new version.

I'm looking at vbPortal's shoutbox which does have every thing I need, waiting for the download. I just don't see this version as a real anwser to professional looking sites, or larger boards. May be if you have a small forum and don't mind no timestamp and are ok with it's current speed and little bumps like having to relogin more often. I think the older version which many sites still use on older vb versions smokes this newer version.

Just my honest observation and opinion mate. Out of 5 stars I would give this may be 3 stars.
Didn't mean anything negative.

When the ShoutBox would not run right for me and others, we knew something was wrong, even when others tried to say we did something wrong.

Obviously, since it runs right now, it was something in the combination of the servers we were on and the script. Just not an issue for everyone.

Might be the same for you.

All I am saying is that the script itself runs faster the old 2.0. And cleaner.

There is absolutely no slow down for me.

So, it looks like, from experience, your having issues between your vB and the server. Another upgrade may fix it for you.

You can add the time stamps. How is laid out in prior posts.

Having the shoutbox, time stamps and the rest is personal preference.

That is all I am saying. No argument intended. ;)

As for FF. I tried it and dumped it. Too many problems with too many sites.

I run 2 sites, one with vB and one with SMF. Also had phpBB before. None played nice with FF.

hey no offense taken I assure you!

I hate hacking scripts and modifying templates. Not that it's too hard, but it all adds up at the end of the day. I am currently waiting to install vbPortal, I may upgrade to 3.64 while I am waiting, but I see no point in working on this right now. Will wait and see how the shoutbox works that comes with vbPortal.

Your right there could be server issues too, but have not seen any with mysql. It could be directly related to the flatfile and my server. Or it could be some thing else too. All I know is it's running a bit slower for me. Not always. Some times the shouts do appear right away, most of the times there is a annoying delay of 3 to 10 seconds. ANd there is the login issue too. Now I have to login to my forum more often then I use to.

My server is running
Linux - Apache v1.3.37
php 4.4.4
mysql 4.1.21

no telling how they have things config in the backend, security is a concern with many hosts and it seems some things will conflict with some apps. Who has the time to sort thru all that? If I have to I will, but I'm hoping not to have too

Regards

My server is the same as yours.

One note here is that I use to have the login issues as well. Also the search and quick links didn't work often.

I had been using the always logged in hack to the templates. That caused problems.

I stopped using that and went to IE 7 and a lot of things went away. Probably some issue with ajax.

Wish I could help more. I know it is frustrating.

The flatfile system makes it faster and lessens the server load. This has been used on a 7k+ user site which gets about 1 shout every 10 seconds. It's either you or your host that's causing problems. Not the mod.

Or a bug in vB itself.

You tried to tell me before, Roger, when I had problems, it was me or the server.

The ONLY thing that has changed from then to now, was vB itself. And the problems I had with not showing the shout entry box are now gone.

No disrespect intended, but that is the facts regarding the issues I had. And I was only one of many that reported the same problems.

vB ugraded, and now the disappearing parts of the shoutbox, search and quick links have disappeared. Nothing else changed.

To my original question below...I contacted my server host and he said the following: "The shout table inside the forums database has 31k rows of information in it. I believe your data is still there, the application you are using just must not be setup correctly. That error message you are getting below is simply stating that it can not create that table because its already there with data in it."

Could someone please tell me how do I correct this so that I may reinstall the hack?

Does it look familiar to anyone else? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! I'd like to just revert back to 2.0 until a later date since I have all of the hacks to integrate it throughout my site.

I don't know what was said before, but I would go on server to phpMyAdmin, go the forum DB, find in list on left side, find the shout table by scrolling down to it, dropping it (ONLY IT) and then reinstalling the product checking yes to over write.

This mod is causing a high server load on my machine. Anything I can do to reduce this a bit? Should I delete the archives, does that make the server load higher?

I want to make sure that I don't "break" this flat-file storage shoutbox...

Any input is appreciated. Thanks, John
Data as of 8:30 PM:

Total Shouts: 312,486
Shouts In Past 24 Hours: 7,644

We've been using the Shoutbox for about a month now with no problems. I'm about to prune... but I was hoping to save the log.

Ah well.
