Any advice on where I can look to create or reuse VBs attachment feature?

I want to create a custom hack where ppl upload an image and assign attributes (name, year)... and i want it to integrate into VB using global.php...

I was thinking... maybe i can go through VBs attachment code but i do regular pruning and i can't afford to lose this particular data... so i may need a seperate attachment php...
