Thread Thumbnails For 3.6.*

I was wondering if it was possible do a hack like this. Its basically just a thread thumbnail. A user can enter a link from a image host site like imageshack.us, photobucket.com, ect ect. I only need it for a couple forums. There was a hack for this a while back but it used images that were added as attachments, since I dont let my members upload attachments, ill need it for a image hosting site. Heres a link to the original hack. Let me know if you can do it ;)
