I tried it, the screen comes up but it says: 401

in my htaccess file I've set this:

AuthName AxRestricted
AuthType Basic
AuthUserFile /forum/.htpasswd
Require valid-user

and in my htpasswd file this:

furious:$1$UEKhOrVC$F21Ihp9c5.TLZB1ei1H8j1

(tried it like this too:

AuthUserFile /usr/export/www/vhosts/funnetwork/hosting/*(myhostname)*/forum/.htpasswd

but then nothing shows up..

Did you put both the files in the same dir?

You could use a php file to list Directory contents, and in that PHP file you could use an authorization based on vB user/pass combinations, I believe i made one for vB3.0.x

I'd prefer to use Deaths method though..

Let vBulletin control the .htpasswd file, adding a user/pass when a new user registers (or is added in the admin CP) and removing the user/pass when they are deleted.

Of course, you'll need some code to encrypt the password for the user to htpasswd format but it's a peice of cake ;)

Use a small "r" for require...

Also note that the AuthUserFile must be an Absolute Path e.g. ...

/dev/home/user/www/public_html/forum/mp3/.htpasswd

or
D:/webserver/apache/website/forum/mp3/.htpasswd
