The hack is out there regardless of people's opinions. To me, it's up to the admins whether they want to install it or not. I don't think it's anyone's place to impose their beliefs onto anyone else. I know the argument is about protecting users who may not realise their PMs can be read, but to be perfectly honest, users must realise the messages have to be stored somehow and thus they are likely to be accessible.

The first one came out for 2.3.x
As for the morality of such hack, I believe that it is not unless you have a reason to suspect that a certain user is causing trouble via private messages. Then it would be the same as "reasonable suspicion" for search on school grounds.
