I suggested this a while back, it ended up as being me who was going to do it but I couldn't get my hands on the db structure

I think it's a simple and doable idea. Many coders like to know their total installs without having to add them all up. As long as those totals can be used respectfully, I don't see a problem with adding them in the future.
