Default writing a hack for auto closing a thread

Well, I've not yet made a custom hack of my own, but i have a couple of ideas.

One is giving a user the ability to automatically close their own threads if they want to do so.

Such as, a user makes a post, and before they submit that post, they could either enter a time/date they would like the thread to close, and press submit.
Then after the amount of hours/days/weeks/etc that they set passes, the thread will close on its own.

So how would i go about taking on such a project... where do i begin, what do i do?

well, to close it you would just have it auto run a query in the sql to set the "open" inside of the post=0

To be more specific
You must first be a registered member to view any code.

ok, so what steps would i need to take here.

first i would need a template right. i would like to call this template using a $template function where id like the form to show up. and this template would have my input functions .... say a radio box to select either "remain open/auto close after x days/hours" and an input box for entering the value.

then what?

Well you would need somewhere to store the threads that need to be closed and close them in a cron job.
