Make forum acting as a catagory look like a forum!

What is extreamly annoying about sub catagorys is, if you have a forum that contains only sub catagorys and you set this forum as a catagory so that you dont have the forum under the sub catagorys, the gradient changes on the front page.

For example, i have a forum which talks about two things, say mobiles and laptops and i want to have these two forums in a subcatagory inside another forum called tech. If i set the tech forum as a catagory it changes what the tech forum looks like on the forum home, its background is now the blue gradient bar. However, if i dont set tech as a catagory, the tech forum looks like the other forums on the forum home (which is what i want) but now you have the forum section under the sub catagorys in the tech forum, and the only thing you can do with it is say 'dont post here!'.

So, my question is this, is there any way to have a forum which contains subcatagorys and is set to be a catagory look the same on the forum home as a forum that is set to be a forum and not a catagory! My mapping forum is set as the catagory but i want it to display like the suggestions forum and like the off topic forum that you can see here:
