Editing external RSS feed

How do I shorten the length of message in RSS2? It normally shows the entire first post of the thread, but I've seen it set to a maximum # of characters on some forums.. how do I do that?

Also, how do I edit the output of the actual feed item? I want to add a sig to the bottom of each item in the external feed.

As always, any help is appreciated.
