Default database question

I want to keep my existing database at one place, but host my board at another host, could that work? Kind like remote. Because the one host I can only install phpbb on but that's one I pay for by phone, and I'ld like to keep my db from a free host running on it.

Like:

my database is at lycosfree,
but my host is at a payed host (small fee so can't run vbulletin on database, strange but true, I can only install phpbb on it)
so the files I'ld run from the payed host and try linking them to an outside (eg lycosfree)..

I hope I explained good because it's a bit complicated

never done anything like that before.
But i'm guessing all you would have to do is edit your config.php accordingly

like said never done it before
but where it says
You must first be a registered member to view any code.
you would have to change localhost to the address of your actual db
then everything else should be as you would setup anyway

// ****** DATABASE SERVER NAME ******
// This is the hostname or IP address of the database server.
// It is in the format HOSTORT. If no PORT is specified, 3306 is used.
// If you are unsure of what to put here, leave it at the default value.
$servername = 'http://phpmyadmin.mydomain.com/';

(edited mydomain.com ffcourse, tried it with and withouth the slash)

I tried this but then I've recieved an error:

There seems to have been a slight problem with the database.

That would still require you keeping both hosts, would it not? At which point it makes the whole purpose pointless, or am i just confused?
