@omar - have you tried my suggestion in post #22 ? (to replace entire variable with some dummy text, to test if changing the variable affect your template) ?

if nothing happens, then we are trying to change the wrong variable (or it's right variable & wrong hook location). In that case safe to assume the str_replace() is working just fine, it's just nothing happens when you change that variable.

Now that i look at code you wrote, shouldn't the output of the str_replace() be assigned back to $adv_portal_rotating_articles ?? (instead of $adv_portal)
I mean it's logical to assume the modified template should override the original template.

Eitherway, It seems the variable called $adv_portal does not affect the tempalte you are viewing (or, as said, the hook location choosen is in such "stage" the variable was already sent to template cache & any change made there is rendered useless).

I have tried changing it back and forth using both $adv_portal_rotating_articles and $adv_portal how none have worked

well, let me do some more digging and testing to see if I can figure it out and I will revert back
