Default connect to ftp via proxy ?

hi,

just wondered if anyone tried & know whether it is possible or not to make the fsocketopen() or ftp_connect(), or any other connect function in php, to work via proxy server ?

Wanted to see if possible to make ftp status checker that will use other proxy to avoid detection of the board ip.
i've googled for such way but came up empty.
i did found some mention of cURL modle/class, that supposely support proxy, but that's for HTTP.

i'm gonna investigate this a bit further, but if anyone can help by giving out few tips, it could save couple of days/hours for me, and that would be great.

greets.
