Question 3.5.4 upgrade to 3.6.0 ???

Hi guy's;

I have 2 forums right now, one I got 3 years ago; the 3.5.4 and one I got this year; the 3.6.0. and I kinda like the new features the new version has to offer for my new forum, but now I desided I want to upgrade my old forum the 3.5.4 to 3.6.0...

my question to you is?... how do I do that, with out loosing any mods made to the 3.5.4. or loosing all my members, topics, posts... etc... any help would be appriciated.

-Alex

Do a db backup, upload all the 3.6 files overwriting the old files and then run the install scripts, most mods work for 3.6 if they don't there is normally another version out for that mod.

No it's not, and that would have been a big mistake if they would have run install.php. By using the term "install scripts" instead of "upgrade" scripts you did imply for them to use install.php. There is a "install.php" and a "upgrade.php". You told them to run the "install scripts". If they would have run install.php then they would have deleted their old files. Please, in the future, be more careful when giving others instructions, and don't use vague terms that can be misinterpreted. Thank you Rickie3 for clearifying this. Hopefully the original poster did not use the install.php file

@ upsetter - we always backup not only our database but also the skin(s) and the server before making a big switch like this. Save them all in one folder on your computer and don't delete them until you have verified that everything is working correctly. Also, not all 3.5.4 mods work with 3.6.0 yet, or they are available but the code has changed in them (which means you'd have to reinstall them from scratch) so you might lose a few of them. I would make a list of all your mods and then check to see if they have 3.6.0 versions available. Best of luck with the upgrade ;)

Yes ok smartarse. They both move towards the same goal though: To get the to a working version of vB.

@ upsetter: if you choose to upgrade and want some help feel free to pm me

ps. The skin would be in the db backup minus the files which you would already have from when you installe the skin, If you want to be totally bullet proof though do a home backup that will download the entire contents of your most folders on your server to your pc then do an sql backup and then in cawse of ermergency you can reupload the files and import the old database and you'll be back to normal

No, they don't, and vB wouldn't have written two different files that apply the same exact effect. The difference, and in this case a BIG difference, is that one would delete his old files, which he specifically said that he didn't want to do. We understand that you know the difference between these two files, but the original poster obviously does not, and his forum files are our main concern in this case. Thank you.

So running vb3.6 and running vb3.6 are 2 different goals? I'll have to look into that. By heading torwards the same golas i meatn exactly waht i just said, running vb and running vb which to me sound the same thing although i know they do it in a completely different way.
