Welp, I figured I'd throw my site, Space Buffs, up for a showcase here.
Astronomy and Space Travel Forum
There isn't really much to say about it—it doesn't have a tons of hacks, and the subject matter is pretty self-explanatory. I have put a lot of time into it, though, and I ask that you all check out the three themes I've created for it so far.
Also, if anyone has any suggestions on how to go about promoting it, I'd be very grateful. Promotion is undoubtedly my weakest skill set. I've acquired quite a few high quality back links—i.e., links on high
PR and "trusted" sites, mostly university sites, as well as listings in the ODP and Yahoo directories—but none of these seem to drive much traffic to the site. They've bumped my
PR up, but direct referrals are few and far between. They haven't helped my search engine rankings much either.
I've tried Google Adwords, but conversions have been so low that I came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth the money.
I wonder if I'm missing a good "hook". Not to toot my own horn, but I know my site design far surpasses similar astronomy and space travel communities, but I also realize that isn't the the most important thing. So far as SEO goes, I've tried to make my pages as SEO friendly as possible, short of using third party modifications like Zoints SEO and vbSEO. I really don't have much confidence in these, as I belive modern search engines don't rely so much on SEO friendly URLs as they did in the past.
Cripes, I started rambling. I have TONS of experience with vBulletin design—both with my own sites and designing other sites—but I've yet to establish a successful community of my own. Rather frustrating, really.
Anyhoo, thoughts welcome!
