From what I've heard:

There was an on-going hardware problem that Jelsoft has been trying to get fixed for some time (I was told this was an HDD) but The planet never got around to fixing it. Now that little problem has become a big problem and this downtime is the result.

Obviously this is not a good thing. I think they should look into getting some more boxes behind these sites. It's a long overdue upgrade imho. Hopefully this downtime will force them to do just that, we'll see..

edit - was just told it will hopefully come back in 4 - 5 hours.

[11:45:31am] (FreddieBingham) hopefully it will be back in 4 - 5 hours
[11:45:59am] (FreddieBingham) when pings to the server start working, you can assume myisamchk is running, which takes 3+ hours
[11:46:33am] (FreddieBingham) they are currently rebuilding the raid array after swapping drives, I have no explanation as to why it take them so long to do it other than they must really suck
[11:47:36am] (FreddieBingham) the rumor is they claim the SCSI controller went nuts and took out drives
[11:48:16am] (FreddieBingham) so they rebuilt the thing yesterday and it happened again so they moved the raid to a new machine
This is what Brad told another place. ;)

From Kier;

As many of you will have probably noticed by now, vBulletin.com and the other official sites have all been offline for several hours now.

Late last night an anomaly was noticed in several systems on the vBulletin server. The anomaly gradually grew more severe until it was decided to reboot the server.

Unfortunately, the server failed to reboot successfully. Analysis from staff at the data center has drawn the conclusion that a fatal error has occured in the server, and a full system rebuild will be required.

This rebuild is currently underway. If it becomes apparent that data has been lost, it will be limited to data from the 24 hours preceeding the failure, as a nightly backup of all important data is made to tape.

We are now working with the data center staff to bring the various services back online as soon as possible.

Thanks for bearing with us!

Guys I think we're all prematurely jumping the gun here. No one here knows exactly what's going on and badmouthing them makes this forum look bad. I'm new here but I like this place. Lots of useful info and lots of cool hacks. I just think sitting here and badmouthing the vB team over some downtime is out of line.

For all we know there could have been some massive failure and they are completely restoring.

Sorry, vBulletin.com is currently unavailable.
We apologize for the continued inaccesability of vBulletin.com, vBulletin.org and other vBulletin-related sites.

This is due to a hardware problem with one of our servers. We are working with our host to rectify the situation and bring the sites back online as soon as possible.

It would be smart if they would make a official statement (thread) here. They know alot of people look on this site for info about vb.

If they came here I suspect they would take a dim view of posts like this from site administrators.

Lets push the word out that vBH is up and running. If you know any forum people on AIM or MSN or Yahoo or Whatever hit them up to come here.

The error page is an improvement since it gives at least some kind of status.

There is nothing wrong with that quote. It gives people a place to talk about vBulletin, their product.
