Maybe we should not be copycats, and maybe we should make up our own coder titles?

I don't like the idea of coder titles being related to "Installs", nor does the Install mechanism, borrowed from vb.org, have much real value. A hack's popularity does not equate to the author's coding skill, for better or worse: they are simply two separate things and shouldn't be linked via "user titles". It's a bit of silliness we can do without, I think. It also forms the basis for the underlying problems experienced un-endingly at .org, namely, stratification of the forum's userbase into the "cans" and the "cant's".

I'd much rather see a "subscribe" for hacks, than an "Install". Users could subscribe to a plugin, and thus be notified of any support issues, upgrades, or change in status (from un-supported to supported, or vice-versa).

That could be a two-way channel of communication. The plugin author could have a query to show them who had subscribed to their plugin.

An "install" counter tied to user titles is an out-of-date and problematic hold-over: this forum can do something more clever and valuable!

Agreed. I don't think installs should be linked either. As tgreer said it does not demostrate the coders skill. When a coder releases a mod thats what counts becuase he spent time to make it, it doesn't matter how many installs the mods should have. I think it would be a nicer environment just to leave the install system in hacks as is but not link it to the coder's profile. You could hold a poll.

That's fine, I think a Hacks Database would be one way to distinguish vbhackers from .org. I maintain another way is to jettison the "Install" system, and let users pick their user titles from a few standard options: staff, admin, coder, designer, vb user... something along those lines. User title has nothing to do with coding skill has nothing to do with hack popularity.
