Question New Memory, No Difference!?!

I just added 2 extra gigs of RAM to the 1 gig I already have and I swear, my pc is running just as slow or slower. I see virtually no improvements whatsoever. My adobe applications should have a little spunk to them but they take forever to load as usual. I bought the extra memory because I do plenty of video editing. My friend installed 2 fresh sticks at a gig a piece and his system screams. I'm running 3 gigs! What could be the problem? Here is the stuff I bought.

if you have 3 gigs of RAM and your pc is running slow.. it's time to get a new motherboard.

Remember,, your pc will only ran as fast as the slowest link..

also,, most older pc's will only handle 1 gig of ram.. if this is the case and you add 2 more sticks.. it wont even recognize it..

my pc is 5 years old, with a gig in it and it's running like a champ with adobe, dreamweaver and 5 windows open ;)

cheers

Memory isn't the only factor, a 10,000 RPM hard drive and a 2+ core CPU help.

2 gigs is all you normally need, Vista uses about 40% just using the internet, 55% when using photoshop, dreamweaver, ftp and 75% when playing a high res game.

I agree about the harddrive. That will make a big difference. However regarding the memory, you didn't say which OS you were using and that's important. If it's vista then running slow and sluggish seems to be very common. If it's XP then 3 gigs it too much and will actually run slower than 2 gigs. If it's OS X then you shouldn't have a problem unless the memory is bad.

The cause could be down to a number of factors. The most serious being that you bought some dodgy memory to making simple opimization changes. Have you tried going in the bios and looking for anything that might need enabled or disabled?

It could be a 100 things down to 1 being 2 dodgy ram sticks.

I'll stick to my 512meg of ram, there's simply nothing more satisfying than working on a machine that's begging for more ram. :devious:

Try taking 1 of the 1 gig sticks out of the pc and running the machine with 2 gig.

I can't believe this. My machine is now screaming. I took out my 1 gig that's made up of 2-512mb sticks and now the performance is night and day.

Smile

What motherboard do you have? We might be able to tweak it some more

I love it when motherboards leave skid marks :p

They make the best motherboards in my opinion. Always top notch designs.

Two possible solutions:

* upgrade bios firmware
* what are the caslatency of the different memory specs, has also an influence on performance
