i have realised that my site has been visited by googlebot. A robot. is that a good thing or bad thing because iit does take up my bandwidth.

unless you on got a few MB's of bw, it's a good thing I guess

i've got 500mb band and already used up cos becoming popular nad google and some other archiver took 50mb

500mb and a popular site dont make a good match lol

create a robots.txt in your root directory and put on it:
User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /


or in the metaTAGs add:

<meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow">

Why in the world would you want to stop any search engine bot from indexing your site?

You want to WELCOME google bot and the others. Why? Because that is how the Serch engines find out about your site and index pages to put in the search engines.

Why is this important? Simple. Do a Search on google for CADILLAC CTS. The third site listed is Lincoln vs Cadillac, one of my sites.

Now why is this important? Because Cadillac CTS is searched 323 times every day - and everyone of those people see my site and some of them even register. This means more members on my site, more posting, new people.

That is just the results for 1 Keyword Phrase. There are many I rank highly for and the first step to being ranked well is actually being spidered and indexed. Its not the only step, but it's the first step.
